The Seven Husbands
of Evelyn Hugo

By Taylor Jenkins Reid

Evelyn Hugo may be one of the more complex protagonists to come along in recent memory. The aging Hollywood star revisits the rich narrative arc of her long, winding life, reflecting on her seven marriages, and a lesbian affair, through a series of interviews with magazine reporter Monique Grant. Evelyn isn’t always easy to understand or root for; she’s complicated like the rest of us, and leads a nuanced, at times wildly selfish, at times deeply self-reflective life. I won’t be offering any spoilers, but the ending is so powerful and unexpected, I was nearly leveled by it. It’s also deeply satisfying if you’re drawn to stories about Hollywood, from its Golden Era all the way through to the dynamic, troubled ‘80’s.  I must recommend that you read this book if you want a summer reading experience that will carry you away, entertain you and that you won’t be able to shake off for some time.
