The mostly female-led cast of Lioness, now on Paramount+, delivers convincing, riveting, edge-of-your-seat performances in this new American spy thriller. Zoe Saldana is a stand-out as CIA officer, Joe, tasked with overseeing the Lioness operation in the field. Under her watchful is Force Recon Marine, Cruz Manuelos, a rookie operative in the Lioness Program. Expertly portrayed by Laysla de Oliveira, Manuelos is taut, lean and a fighter. Having come from a tough background, she’s slow to trust anyone and is forever in fight or flight mode. When she’s on the screen, it’s hard to look anywhere else, but the cast is rounded out by heavy hitters like Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman, both in fine form here. Well-written and with great character development, Lioness delivers more thrills than Showtime’s Jack Ryan, and with better cinematic pacing than many theatrical releases these days.
