Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve been attracted to stories about spies. The international settings, the intrigue, the secrecy, all lend to great, riveting storytelling. The Diplomat, currently on Netflix, answers all these longings and more. The always arresting and imminently watchable Kerri Russell plays Kate Wyler, the recently appointed US ambassador to the UK. While she’s navigating a series of international crises, she’s also trying to hold onto her tenuous marriage to her husband, Hal, a career diplomat, winningly played by Rufus Sewell. It’s a gorgeous show to look at, with strong production values and international settings matched by great acting, brisk pacing, and intelligent writing. Highly binge-worthy television, it will have you on the edge of your seat and begging for more episodes. Happily, it’s been renewed for a second season.
